“Tattooing is my ultimate joy,” says Jordy. She thrives when clients bring ideas that resonate with her passions: life, music, movies, and everything that makes us tick. One of her favorite pieces is a Reptar/traditional dragon mash-up for her dear friend Matt, blending ’90s nostalgia with classic tattoo styles.
“How can I pick a favorite tattoo when tattooing itself brings me so much joy? There’s nothing better than geeking out with clients about life, music, movies, and all the things that make us who we are. It’s especially magical when a friend brings an idea that’s right up my alley.
My dear friend Matt is filling his leg with 90s nostalgia patchwork pieces from his childhood. Matt is one of the funniest people I know, and his tattoo ideas are always irreverent and fun. Life is too short not to get tattoos that make you smile!
He asked me to do Reptar from Rugrats, but I didn’t want to just copy the cartoon version straight from the show. Instead, I created this mash-up of Reptar and a traditional dragon. I love mixing pop culture references with classic tattoo motifs, and this tattoo turned out bright, bold, and fun. Perfect for one of my favorite people.
Sometimes I still have to pinch myself because I’m so lucky people want my art on them! If you’re reading this and want to collaborate on some rad mash-ups, hit me up!

Ben: True Classics and Traditional Flash Art
Ben’s fascination with tattoos began in grade school when he first saw a flash rack packed with diverse designs. Now, he brings that same excitement to clients at our tattoo shop near Philadelphia.
“The first time I saw a flash rack in a tattoo shop, I was still in grade school. It was packed with kanji symbols, Tasmanian devils, roses, and lucky charms. I was there with my aunt while she was getting one of her many tattoos (I don’t remember which one, she’s covered!), and I remember picking out a small design of a broken axe that cost $10. I didn’t get the tattoo that day, but the sheer variety of designs in that flash rack stuck with me. Being a kid in the 90s, I think it reminded me of sticker sheets, which is probably what drew me in.
I have that axe tattoo now and it’s better, bigger, and certainly not $10 but that’s the beauty of traditional flash. The piece you see here, a snake wrapped around two shaking hands, comes from a flash sheet I painted, adapted to fit the spot my client chose.
These days, I spend a lot of time painting tattoo flash, trying to recapture that joy and sense of discovery I felt when I first dug through that flash rack. My approach changes depending on the day, sometimes I aim to carry classic designs through the ages, and other times I want to create something completely new to add to the tattoo lexicon.
No matter what the designs are, I find flash is always a great starting point for tattooing, and I hope others feel the same when they look through my work.,” he shares. Ben specializes in true classic designs and believes flash art is a fantastic starting point for any tattoo.

“Choosing a favorite tattoo is like trying to pick a favorite petnearly impossible. But this particular tattoo (one of two, actually) holds a special place in my heart because of the therapeutic value it brought me.
Let me take you back a couple of years to explain. My wife and I were trying to adopt a little Frenchie named Trixie from a local rescue. She had been through a lot, and my wife was determined to give her the safe, loving home she deserved. We filled out the application and followed up with the rescue a few times to check on our status, but we didn’t hear anything for weeks. Then, the rescue announced they were hosting a Halloween party for all the adoptable dogs. I suggested we go, to show the rescue that we were the right fit for Trixie. My wife agreed, and we went to the event, where we saw little Trixie dressed as a pumpkin. My wife fell in love instantly. We made sure to introduce ourselves, putting faces to the names on our application, and left feeling hopeful.
The next day, I flew to Europe for work. The day after that, my wife called me with the incredible news that our application had been approved and she could pick up Trixie the next day. And that’s exactly what she did.
By the time I returned from Berlin, my wife and Trixie had already bonded, but I didn’t mind. She was part of our family now, and she was incredible. She fit in perfectly with our other Frenchie and, knowing she was safe, her personality really began to shine.
Unfortunately, a little while later, Trixie developed masses in her lower stomach. After countless vet visits, second opinions, and specialist consultations, we found out it was cancer. We did everything we could for her in the time we had left, but the cancer spread fast, and eventually, we had to say goodbye.
Not long after, my wife asked if I could tattoo a portrait of Trixie on her. I do a lot of pet portrait tattoos, but I wasn’t ready. I couldn’t bring myself to look at photos of Trixie, let alone design or tattoo something in her memory. So, I put it off. I just wasn’t emotionally prepared.
Around the same time, I received an email from a couple who had just lost their dog, Luna. They wanted tribute tattoos, and they sent me all the details about who Luna was: her personality, her quirks, even how she loved sitting with her paws crossed like a little lady. The email gave me a great foundation to design something meaningful. Over the course of two appointments, one for each of them, we shared stories, memories, and the weight of our collective grief. It was cathartic, like a therapy session, and at the end of it, they had permanent tributes to Luna, and I had worked through some of my own emotions about Trixie.
That’s why this tattoo is one of my favorites. Through it, I found a way to honor Trixie without even realizing it at the time. And one day, when I’m finally ready to look at her photos again, I’ll create the memorial tattoo my wife has been waiting for.,” Doug reflects on a memorable piece he created at our tattoo shop near Philadelphia.
